Vanilla Ice, who’s real name is Robert Van Winkle, is being held without bond in Palms Beach County Jail on a charge of simple domestic battery following an alleged altercation with his wife.

Laura Van Winkle told police the couple had been arguing since Wednesday after she purchased a new bedroom set without his permission. She alleged that the washed up rap star was hitting and kicking her. She later recanted, saying he only pushed her.

The couple have been married since 1996 and have two daughters. Van Winkle was arrested in 2001 for domestic violence after pulling his wife’s hair during an argument as they were driving on Interstate 595.

Ice is best known for his hit song “Ice Ice Baby” from 1990. His mainstream success was short lived and even though he received a Grammy nod for Best New Artist, his fame had faded by 1991. Although he continued making music, his successes have been moderate.

Van Winkle is expected to face a judge this morning.

Sunday night was taping night for Idol Gives Back at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. The star studded event will be broadcast on Wednesday night in place of the normal American Idol show.

One of the big highlights was a duet by Fergie and Heart. They a rocking though abbreviated rendition of Heart’s Barracuda, which the pop artist launching into two cartwheels on stage.

Barracuda is usually five minutes long, so we were sweating it with the arrangement, and so was Fergie,” Nancy Wilson said backstage. “We had two chances to get it right. The first two times we got it very wrong. We actually did it right when it mattered.”
